Final Thoughts and Project

For my final project I wanted to create a safe place for anyone, but specifically a child, or perhaps me as a child.  So for this I decided to sew and construct a teepee with embroidered details.
For the embroidery thread and yarn details I used natural dyeing techniques of purple onion skins to emulate the golden yellow from Golden Books of my childhood.
Here is the embroidery thread after I dyed it...

The images on the sides of the teepee are inspired by Golden Book illustrations, but are kept simple enough to hopefully evoke thoughts of childhood and wonder.

Here are images of the teepee…

This class has left me so full of ideas - in fact I had a dream of creating wallpaper for the background of the teepee - I have burned screens for it - and I hope to use the cochineal bug to create an ink to use in screen printing.  But alas it wasn’t finished it time - but this leaves me hopefully for things to come in the future.  I look forward to mixing more natural dye techniques with embroidery and with screen printing to continue to create small precious spaces inspired by childhood.

I love the paths that this class has taken each of us, how we are all on our own walk but how we can share our good findings with each other on the way.  Even in our diversity I feel inspired by everyone in this class and feel very fortunate to of been a part of it.
I am inspired by David’s reach for community without boundaries.  It reminds me about my several communities and pushes me to be more involved in all of them.
I am pushed to be more like Pamela with an overwhelming urge to want to learn everything.  Her quench for knowledge is infectious.  To travel, to take more classes, to make.
I am going to be more like Martha and take what I learn in class and implement it more in my daily classroom.  I love how she is able to practice what she learns instantly with her students and is able to push them forward in new ways.
I am going to use research and books that Lynn and Daniel have passed my way and explore the book Craftism and the embroidery artists that Lynn has shared with me.

Thank you all for being amazing and inspiring me over the past couple months.

  2. You know...it's frustrating that Blogger is blocked by my district. There are so many projects that my students could take away from!

  3. Carleen,
I have so enjoyed taking summer classes with you, your blogs, your videos, your ongoing focus in your artwork as you take us on your journey through childhood and safe places. I admire your involvement with your students and how you are giving them opportunities to be playful and creative. You have managed to keep a part of the "inner child" alive in all that you do, and it is an inspires me to be more playful with my middle school and high school students who so often are bogged down with grades and performance. Your teepee is delightful. I can't wait to see your next pieces of art come alive!!!
